Trolltech and Inprise/Borland Collaborate on Linux GUI

Scotts Valley, California, 01 January - 2000

Kylix GUI Components to be Built Upon Popular Qt Crossplatform Linux Framework

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Trolltech and Inprise/Borland (Nasdaq: INPR) today announced a technology licensing agreement covering Trolltech's Qt graphical user interface (GUI) application framework. As a result of the agreement, Inprise/Borland can leverage Qt in its forthcoming Delphi(TM) and C/C++ rapid application development (RAD) environment for Linux code named Kylix(TM). Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"The Kylix project is planned to be the vehicle that delivers mass application availability for Linux," said Dale Fuller, interim president and CEO of Inprise/Borland. "With Kylix, developers will have the freedom of choice in Linux distributions and desktop environments for both Open Source and commercial applications development. Based on performance and cross-platform Linux and Windows support, Qt was the obvious choice for Kylix."

"We are fully committed to Linux. Our Qt technology is already the basis of KDE, the wildly popular graphical desktop environment for Linux," said Haavard Nord, CEO of Trolltech. "This agreement further establishes Qt's position as the leading cross-platform GUI application framework. We are pleased to see Inprise/Borland provide this high quality of professional software development tools and services for Linux."

At the heart of the Kylix Project, Inprise/Borland is developing a visual component library (VCL) to speed and simplify native Linux application development. This agreement permits Inprise/Borland usage of Qt to implement the underlying graphical user interface layer (GUI) of the Borland(R) Linux VCL for Kylix. As a result of this agreement, Kylix will include a license to develop GUI applications with the Qt based VCL.

Inprise/Borland recently made a minority investment in Trolltech.

About the Kylix project:

The Kylix project is planned to be the first high-performance native Rapid Application Development (RAD) development tool for the Linux platform. The Kylix project is a component-based development environment for two-way visual development of GUI (graphical user interface), Internet, database and server applications. Kylix will be powered by a new high-speed native Delphi/C/C++ compiler for Linux and will implement a native Linux version of the Borland VCL (Visual Component Library) architecture. The Borland VCL for Linux is designed to accelerate native Linux application development and simplify the porting of Delphi and C++Builder(TM) applications between Windows and Linux.
