Ningbo Bird Standardizes on Trolltech's Qtopia Software for Linux-based Mobile Phones
3GSM WORLD CONGRESS, Cannes, France, 15 February - 2005 - Trolltech®, provider of leading technologies for Linux and cross-platform software development, today announced that Ningbo Bird, the largest domestic supplier of mobile phones in China, has selected Trolltech's Qtopia® as the software platform for all its Linux-based mobile phones. Ningbo Bird will launch its first handset build on Linux and Qtopia, the E899 smartphone, by mid-2005.
"This is a huge win for Qtopia," said Haavard Nord, Trolltech CEO. "China is the largest wireless market on the planet and Bird is the largest local supplier and exporter of mobile handsets in China. Bird's commitment to Linux and Qtopia, along with other key mobile phone players in Asia like Datang Mobile and Yuhua Teltech, provides strong momentum for the Linux/Qtopia platform in this market that typically sets the agenda for mobile technology worldwide."
Trolltech's award-winning Qtopia software is a complete, customizable development environment and user interface for mobile phones and personal digital assistants. Qtopia lets manufacturers and service providers cost-effectively develop Linux-based devices while maintaining complete control of branding and user interface design. It extends the flexibility and cost-savings benefits of Linux to the mobile market, serving as an alternative to proprietary software platforms such as Windows Mobile and Symbian.
Qtopia is a key enabler of the growing market for mobile devices built on Linux. Today over 50 leading vendors are designing, building or shipping devices based on Qtopia and related Trolltech software for embedded Linux.
"The rapid rise of Ningbo Bird is attributed to our strong emphasis on product innovation, and Linux with the Qtopia application platform lets us take innovation to a new level," said Mr. Shangguan Yanjun at Ningbo Bird. "With Qtopia and Linux, we can easily modify the user interface and functions on the mobile phone, giving us the flexibility to develop unique and differentiated Linux handsets. We expect that Linux will be a dominant platform in China and throughout the world for mobile devices."
