Judging Criteria and Judges

Judging Criteria Phase I and II

Our panel of judges will evaluate each entry on the following criteria and scoring weight value. See the Developer Challenge rules for more information.

  • Applicability: How well does the application target one of the Developer Challenge categories? (30%)
  • Ease of Use / Documentation: How intuitive and easy to use is the entry without printed documentation? (30%)
  • Practical Uses: The entry's ability to perform functions useful to an end user (end user may be a consumer, a developer, an IT staff person or another progam. (20%)
  • Performance / Efficiency: The ability of the entry to fulfill the function in the most efficent manner. (10%)
  • Originality: The uniqueness of the entry. (10%)

Frank Fitzek

Frank H. P. Fitzek is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Technology, University of Aalborg, Denmark heading the Future Vision and Mobile Device group. He received his diploma (Dipl.-Ing.) degree in electrical engineering from the University of Technology - Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) - Aachen, Germany, in 1997 and his Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University Berlin, Germany in 2002 for quality of service support in wireless
CDMA networks.

As a visiting student at the Arizona State University he conducted research in the field of video services over wireless networks. He co-founded the start-up company acticom GmbH in Berlin in 1999. In 2002 he was Adjunct Professor at the University of Ferrara, Italy giving lectures on wireless communications and conducting research on multi-hop networks. In 2005 he won the YRP award for the work on MIMO MDC and received the Young Elite Researcher Award of Denmark. Due to his outstanding skills and devotion he was selected to receive the Nokia Champion award in 2007. His current research interests are in the areas of wireless and mobile communication networks, mobile phone programming, cross layer as well as energy efficient protocol design and cooperative networking.


Holger Freyther

Holger Hans Peter Freyther is a student of Computer Science at the Free University of Berlin. He is a long time contributor to projects hosted at www.handhelds.org and has a strong belief that all means of communication should be free and open. This driving force lead to his hacking on Qt, Opie, Qtopia, X11/kdrive, tslib, gcc, GNU libc, busybox, linux kernel, exploring DVB-H, GSM, UMTS networks and, thanks to the University, accessing Concept devices and exploring future technology.


John Lombardo











John Lombardo

John Lombardo has been working with Linux since the 0.9 days. His first book, Embedded Linux, was published in 2001. Currently, John is an Software Engineer for the Boeing Company working on embedded Linux systems for use in highly demanding environments.

Tony Rizzo

Tony is a longtime technology industry veteran. He brings to The 451 Group a varied 24-year background in technology and technology publishing. He was an early user of email in the 1980s, and was on the Internet when it was still known as ARPANET. His industry experience includes stints as a programmer and network development specialist early in his career, Assistant Director of The Information Technologies Institute at New York University, and many years in the publishing industry as an editor and analyst. Tony was a founding editor of Microsoft Systems Journal; a founding editor of Network Computing magazine; the Editor in Chief of Netguide, the first publication devoted to covering the Internet; and the Editor in Chief of Internet World magazine. Tony has also served as an Internet technology consultant in New York, and spent a year at Ernst & Young working on delivering Internet-based financial consulting services. In the three years prior to joining The 451 Group, Tony conducted extensive research into all aspects of e-business, especially in the area of Fortune 500 use of the Internet and mobile technology to deliver best business practices.

Dan Williams is currently a PHP developer at HRsmart, but during his career, he has developed on everything from PDA's to IBM mainframe systems. Back in the day, this included being Core developer on Opie, - ipkg bug-fixes and enhancements and various Blackbox/Fluxbox hacks. Dan has been using Linux for approximately 11 years now, and loves to play with and hack on new, cool gadgets running Linux.
