3D Visualization Success with Midland Valley Exploration Limited Presented by Colin Dunlop and Bruce Hargan, Midland Valley Exploration Ltd. Midland Valley Exploration Ltd. (MVE), a world leader in structural geology modeling and analysis, faced a challenge. Customers demanded their 4DVista structural geology viewer software on multiple platforms. MVE also required the ability to develop advanced 3D visualization capabilities, while still delivering a consistent user environment. Their engineering resources were finite. The solution? Qt®, the award winning cross-platform development framework from Trolltech, and the advanced Coin3D graphics toolkit from Systems in Motion (SIM). Colin Dunlop and Bruce Hargan from MVE will discuss the challenges they faced in their 4DVista project. With input from Trolltech and SIM, they will then discuss how Qt and Coin3D addressed their challenges, allowing MVE to deliver advanced 3D visualization capabilities across multiple platforms, saving development time and costs in the process. |

Multi-Threaded Programming: Everything You've Always Wanted to Know, But Have been Afraid to Ask Presented by Naren Karattup, Product Director Developer Tools & Brad Hughes, Senior Software Engineer In this NetSeminar, we will begin by taking a look at the fundamental concepts of multi-threaded programming and the benefits it lends to the development of high-performance, rich-client applications. After providing a general background, we will talk about the straightforward mechanisms for multi-threaded programming provided in the Qt® framework, including the high-level abstraction for inter-object communication called signals-and-slots, followed by a comparison to the approaches taken by Java®. We will conclude with a brief look at how to use these techniques to create high-performance applications that target Windows® 98 to Vista™ from a single source code-base. |

| Video: Developing with Qt on Windows (45 mins) Though Qt is cross platform, it provides many platform specific tools to aid in the ease of development. This presentation will provide an overview on tools and integrations that Qt provides to develop on Windows. In addition, it covers tips, suggestions and tricks that one can use to write Windows specific code and how to access Windows specific APIs/features from Qt code. |
|
| Video: Multimedia Framework (16 mins)
The upcoming Qt 4.4 will have a Multimedia Framework. This framework
can manipulate media coming from different sources (file, network,
camera...). While playback of media contents is the primary goal it's
not limited to that. Its plugin-based architecture allows it to work on
top of virtually any platform-specific Multimedia API like DirectShow,
QuickTime or Xine.
This talk will present the different concepts of our Multimedia
Framework. |
|
| Video: Qt Network Module (17 mins)
Qt provides simple, yet powerful APIs for working with TCP and UDP, for
securing your connection with SSL, and for proxying your connection
through different types of proxy servers. The classes are mainly
asynchronous, and integrating networking code into your application
requires a different programming mindset than traditional GUI
programming. In this presentation, we will walk you through the
essential classes that you need in order to
implement reliable networking using QtNetwork. |
|
| Video: Using Qt Together with 3rd Party APIs (12 mins)
Different frameworks and APIs have different requirements and concepts,
and expect different data structures. However, in spite of the inherent
complexity, being able to use components from different frameworks is
an important requirement for many projects. This session will present the problems that need to be addressed in
general, and how the implementation and API of Qt allows for easy
solutions to integrate Qt code, in plug-ins or components, with code
using other APIs. |
|
| Video: QtScript (9 mins) QtScript enables developers to readily embed a full-fledged scripting environment into their Qt applications; it provides an effective path to making existing and future applications more dynamic and flexible. In this talk, we look at the principal patterns and techniques that QtScript and its API affords. We will see how QtScript integrates seamlessly with the C++ side of the application, making QtScript a natural and complementary extension to the core application logic. |
