ZTE is China's largest telecommunications equipment company, as well as the biggest infrastructure supplier in China’s TD-SCDMA 3G market.

The Challenge

As a carrier, China Mobile realized that to win the 3G battle in the Chinese market, it needed a mobile phone manufacturer, like ZTE, that could provide high-end TD-SCDMA smart phones based on a platform independent framework.  ZTE needed to develop TD-SCDMA smart phones with customizable user interfaces and enriched data services capabilities. At the same time, ZTE required the development of the ZTE UC980 to warrant low R&D costs and quick time to market.

ZTEU980 The Solution

Qt Extended's cross-platform application framework and open source capabilities made it possible for ZTE to support various third party applications enabling them to produce mobile phones more quickly and efficiently. Qtopia provided ZTE with the framework to create a mobile phone that included a powerful browser, multimedia player, real-time visual phone, dual mode automatic switching, real-time news, mobile stock, mobile office service and GPS positioning ZTE TD smart phones as a leader in the Chinese market.

 The Value

The Qt Extended framework enabled ZTE to develop the U980 mobile phone within 10 months cutting down usual 3G phone development time by 8 months. Using the stack protocol, the U980 visual phone is the world’s first mobile terminal that supports the MONA function and can be connected within 1-2 seconds. ZTE’s U980 accounts for more than one-third of the TD-SCDMA mobile phones that have been sold by China Mobile maintaining the carriers leading position in 3G.
